What is AS 3745-2010?

AS 3745-2010 is the Australian Standard for Planning for emergencies in facilities. It sets out how workplaces and multi-occupancy facilities should manage emergencies, including evacuation diagrams, procedures, training, and warden responsibilities.

It is widely recognised as the benchmark for emergency planning across Australia.

What Does the Standard Cover?

Emergency Planning Committee (EPC). The EPC is responsible for overseeing emergency planning within a facility.

They ensure procedures are in place, kept up to date, and relevant to the building.

Emergency Procedures

Every building should have clear procedures for different emergency scenarios.

  • Fire
  • Medical emergencies
  • Evacuation events

Procedures should be practical and specific to the site.

Training and Evacuation Drills

Regular training ensures staff know how to respond during an emergency.

  • Warden training
  • First response training
  • Evacuation exercises

Without training, even the best plan won’t work effectively.

Emergency Equipment

Buildings must have appropriate emergency equipment in place.

  • Fire extinguishers
  • Hose reels
  • Fire panels
  • First aid kits

Equipment must be accessible, maintained, and clearly identified.

Emergency Control Organisation (ECO)

The ECO includes wardens and key personnel who manage emergencies.

  • Chief Warden
  • Area / Floor Wardens

These roles take control during an emergency and guide occupants to safety.

Evacuation Diagrams

Evacuation diagrams are a key requirement under AS 3745.

  • Reflect current building layout
  • Show exits, equipment, and assembly areas
  • Correctly oriented to the viewer
  • Easy to read and understand

They help occupants quickly identify how to evacuate safely.

Communication Systems

Clear communication is critical during an emergency.

  • Emergency warning systems
  • PA systems
  • Verbal instructions from wardens

People need clear direction — quickly.

Ongoing Review and Maintenance

Emergency planning must be kept up to date.

  • Review procedures regularly
  • Update diagrams when layouts change
  • Maintain training records

If the building changes, your emergency plan needs to change too.

What AS 3745-2010 requires of an evacuation diagram

Diagrams are the part of the standard most people see, and the part most often picked up at inspection — usually because the building has changed and the diagram hasn’t.
